In a worst case scenario, they actually get caught out. And getting caught like that then becomes a game changer as unfortunately, one is then forced to explain themselves and confront their greatest fears of discrimination and possibly being ostracized without preparation.
From the moment our parents get to know of our conception and existence, their minds can’t help but plan for our future. They plan the education we will get; the clothes we will wear; the career we will find ourselves in and lastly, for girls, the men we will end up with and have children with, and vice versa for boys. It is instinctive, they can’t help but plan and envision our future. To their defence, our parents happen to be the old school generation not by choice truly; they are a generation whose majority gets to know about sexuality issues through religion and worse of all, word of mouth. Yet religion regards homosexuality as a sin or the devils work.
Now as a daughter raised in a Christian home, if I am to come out to my parents about being a lesbian or one of the spectrums in the LQBTIQ+ community, their first reaction is to think that the devil has attacked their home through me. In their role of being parents, they begin to fear for me, wondering about the prejudice, stigma and discrimination I and even them will be subjected to.
The ‘batho ba tla reng’ syndrome becomes the colour of their skin. And then comes them trying to gain control over the situation and use their authority as parents to nip my sexuality in the bud by threatening to disown me if I don’t fall back in line. The battle lines now get drawn as we would be at loggerheads, resulting in my mental health deteriorating at an alarming speed. The Christian parents forget just how Christ said the second greatest commandment was to love one another as we love Him.
In putting much thought to it, maybe yes I can’t hold it against them that they would think my sexuality changes me being the very same daughter they raised. This is because I am the one upsetting the plans they long made for me before my birth. No more husband, white picket fence and the possibility of grandchild. But then one may argue why the plan I envisioned for myself would not matter while I have to carry the burden and responsibility of ensuring their plan instead becomes a reality.
To parents, family and friends, I call on you to understand before you project. Your acceptance is a thirst that members of the LGBTIQ+ community struggle to quench; to a point where some even sacrifice their own peace and happiness just to have you see, accept and love them. However, the question is, knowing we only live once, why would you stand in the way of one being true to themselves? Why are you not seeing the human in them before the sexuality? Now, members of the LGBTIQ+ community, you have the responsibility to raise awareness and teach our loved ones about the diversity of the ‘new normal’ as opposed to reacting as our loved ones would when they come out or are outed. It’s not easy yes, and it won’t be easy but to get to a point where acceptance occurs we need to bridge the gap created by ‘the ignorance’ that is not blissful.
From working so closely with the LGBTIQ+ community, I have come to learn just how some have the fear of coming out to their loved ones. They would openly be loud and proud about their sexuality in certain places but hide when in spaces where their family is present. Let us build and foster environments that are inclusive of our children’s diversity without projecting our fears, religion, and expectations on them. See the human!
