Molapo Fankienyana, 60, wants the Department of Roads to pay him P150 000 as compensation for injuring his left foot.

Fankienyana injured his left foot in October 2020 while trying to escape the jaws of death in Phitshane Molopo village.

“I was by the bus stop with a few men hiking in the evening. While waiting, I noticed a gang of men approaching and at that moment, each one of us and without warning ran for dear life. We knew from just looking at them that they were thieves baying for blood,” he shared.

Sadly for him, when he tried running, he fell into a nearby culvert situated just behind the bus stop. He suffered broken toes while the rest of his foot was visibly swollen and changing colour.

Since then, Fankienyana has been unable to walk properly. He has even lost his job as a JCB operator, which he has been doing since 2018.

He has three kids to feed but has no money. The mother of his children is also unemployed and life is becoming unbearable.

“They need to pay me, if it was not for that misplaced culvert which is not serving any purpose, I would have not been injured. The doctors also say the broken toe bones will take time to heal.

“I have no money for medication yet I cannot do anything but sit around because I am still in excruciating pain,” he said.

But what saddens him is that the relevant Roads Department officers are dragging their feet to address the matter.

“Those people are not willing to help me. I even left their office deeply hurt one day when one of their officers asked what I was doing falling into a culvert,” Fankienyana shared.

When reached, the Department of Roads confirmed handling the matter but were unable to give full details. This is despite The Midweek Sun having inquired on the matter two weeks back.
