Baha’is send congratulations on Botswana’s Independence Day

-

On behalf of the Bahá’í community of Botswana, it is with great joy and respect that we extend our heartfelt congratulations to the people of Botswana on the occasion of the nation’s Independence Day. This significant day marks not only a historic milestone in the journey of Botswana but also symbolises the enduring spirit of unity, progress, and self-determination that the nation has consistently demonstrated since gaining independence.

Baha’u’llah, the founder of the Bahá’í Faith states, “the purpose for which mortal men have, from utter nothingness, stepped into the realm of being, is that they may work for the betterment of the world and live together in concord and harmony”. At this juncture, we would like to express our unwavering support for the government’s efforts in promoting social harmony, economic development, and the well-being of all Batswana. The spiritual principles of the Bahá’í faith, which include the oneness of humanity, justice, and the elimination of all forms of prejudice, are integral to the progress of a nation. Unity in diversity should be celebrated as a source of strength and richness and this resonates deeply with the values that Botswana upholds.

By working in smaller neighbourhoods to promote the spiritual education of young children and empowerment of junior youth, through joining families and communities in collective prayer and bringing together like-minded individuals to study spiritual principles and build their capacity for action, we firmly believe that diverse communities, engaged in offering acts of service to their fellow man, can bring about lasting progress when spiritual and material progress are recognised to advance hand-in-hand.

Bahá’ís emphasise education as a means to fostering social progress. Almost entirely unique to Botswana, the study of all religions is maintained in the educational curriculum and this promotes knowledge, moral values and the development of character, particularly amongst youth who are integral to the progress of a nation.

In celebrating this Independence Day, we also wish to highlight the importance of fostering a society where diversity is cherished and respected, and where all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds, have equal opportunities to contribute to the nation’s advancement. It is our shared responsibility to create an environment where every citizen can flourish and reach their full potential. The Baha’is feel privileged to live in a society where religious freedom is upheld, where members of all faiths can practise their beliefs without discrimination and in which an interfaith dialogue is promoted for understanding and unity amongst all.

We look forward to the continued collaboration of the Bahá’í community and the people of Botswana in our collective pursuit of a just, prosperous, and harmonious society. Once again, please accept our warmest congratulations on this special day. May the spirit of unity and progress that has defined Botswana’s journey continue to shine brightly in the years ahead. nsa@bahai.org.bw
