Jakamotako uses coloured pencil for drawings

A29-year-old artist from Serowe village, Kefentse Keboitse also known as Jakamotako is a solo portraitur­e who specialise­s in the use of coloured pencils to extract eye-catching drawings on paper. In an interview with Arts & Culture, the young artist explained that growing up he used to do various types of art until he decided to specialise on the production of portraits. This came after he realised that his clientele was more into portraits. He also explained that most of his drawings were produced using coloured pencils.

“That is where the name Jakamotako comes in, an expression that means using my divine gift to make a living. My journey in art began in 2006 when I started Form One under the guidance of my former teacher Kagiso Raphoroka. Then 10 years later I decided to become a full time artist and then created a Facebook page called ‘Decade Artworks.’ The idea of becoming a full time artist came after being inspired by pioneers like Wilson Ngoni who I believe his work ethics and work rates speaks much to me,” he said.

He said his favourite piece would always be his recent drawings challenges. He explained that he always makes sure that his new masterpiec­es challenge the old ones. Keboitse further explained that he received heartwarmi­ng support from the public in the past six years, something he said he would forever be grateful for. He added that he distribute­d to almost every region in the country, with Gaborone as base of his clientele.

Furthermor­e, he said his drawings served as gifts. He stated that they were sold per request where a client had to send in a proposal then he produces the request subjected through online platforms such as Facebook. In his journey as a solo artist, he said he used to partake in President’s Day Competitio­ns for Serowe Region.

Speaking of the challenges he faces as an artist is funds. He explained that he wished to own a studio that had enough material that could help him grow and produce other types of art. His achievemen­ts by far include being announced position one and two during the 2017 and 2018 President’s Day Competitio­ns on drawing category consecutiv­ely.
