Bajwa wanted to get me killed, alleges Imran

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan has claimed that Qamar Javed Bajwa as the chief of the army staff wanted to get him killed to impose a state of emergency in the country.

Quickly ater his assertion, PTI spokesman and former informatio­n minister Fawad Chaudhry said the statement atributed to Imran was misleading and out of context.

Imran had told a TV channel that Bajwa wanted to impose emergency ater geting him killed and thereby geting an extension. “There was a plan to give a religious touch to the assassinat­ion atempt but I foiled it,” he claimed.

The PTI chairman said he would disclose the facts about the murder atempt on him. He said he had repeatedly told the people about the conspiracy to murder him. “I have been told not to talk about them,” he said, adding the crimes “they” commited could not be forgoten.

He said he would go to the people ater his recovery and convey his message to them.

Imran told his party officials that he might be arrested. He said if he was arrested, people should take to the streets like they came out for President Recep Erdogan in Turkey. He said that he would be able to avoid arrest only if there was public pressure. The conspiracy against Erdogan also failed only when the people came out on streets.

“Political opponents want to arrest me but this will not happen.”

Imran said that public pressure should be so much that the whole country should come on the streets on a call. He said that the corrupt group of

Pakistande­mocraticmo­vement(pdm)washarming the country. “I will try to end the government of this corrupt group as soon as possible.”

In a separate developmen­t, a Pakistan army general who was facing spying charges by a military court has been released from the Adiala Jail Rawalpindi ater completing the legal process, a report said quoting unnamed sources.

In May 2019, it was reported that Bajwa had endorsed the life sentence (14 years) for Lt-gen Javed Iqbal along with a brigadier who faced the death sentence.

Iqbal’s family later challenged the sentence in the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench, where the proceeding­s are still underway.

Iqbal held key positions during his service, including director-general of military operations, which is responsibl­e for planning and executing all operations. He also held the post of adjutantge­neral and headed the investigat­ion following the US operation against Osama Bin Laden in Abbotabad in 2011.
