Three doctors held in Kerala for medical negligence

PALAKKAD: Kerala police arrested three doctors of a private hospital here for medical negligence resulting in the death of a woman and her newborn during childbirth in July.

The police booked doctors Ajit, Nila and Priyadarshini in connection with the incident.

The gynaecologists were arrested on the basis of medical reports stating medical negligence during delivery on July 2, 2022, leading to the death of a woman and her newborn child.

The arrested doctors were released on bail. Kerala State Youth Commission registered a case and asked the district police chief to submit a report within a week.

Aiswarya, 25, wife of M Ranjit from Chiturthathamangalam, was admited to Thankam Hospital in Yakkara, near here, on June 29.

On the second day morning, her relatives were told that the infant had died in childbirth. The body was reportedly buried without informing the family. The mother too died next day.

The relatives staged a protest at the hospital and filed a complaint with the police. They blamed the doctors for the death of the woman and her newborn and demanded their arrest.

Following widespread protests the medical board conducted an inquiry and submited a report to the Health Department.

The inquiry found medical negligence on part of the arrested doctors. Palakkad Town South police had earlier registered a case in this regard.

The family alleged that Aishwarya, who was admited for maternity treatment, and her child, died due to serious negligence on the part of the private hospital.

The medical board found that the doctors of Thankam Hospital were guilty of negligence in the death of Aishwarya and her newborn baby.

Trying to get the baby out with a vacuum caused a serious mistake. The baby died because the umbilical cord was entangled in the neck.

Aishwarya’s death was due to bleeding ater using a vacuum.

The medical report also states that the hospital authorities failed to inform relatives about the treatment.
