A sportsman broke the leg of a police officer at the entrance of a police station, prosecutors revealed to the Dubai Criminal Court on Sunday.

The American defendant, 30, boozed up before heading to the Bur Dubai Police Station. He found the Emirati warrant officer, 48, standing outside the gate. He repeatedly thumped his right with a solid tool. He suffered fractures in what a forensic doctor’s report described as a 30 per cent permanent deformity. The defendant also pelted the officer with an obscene insult targeting him and his mother. Prosecutors referred him to the court over alcohol abuse, insulting an on-duty police officer and insulting him. He had contended before police that he was drunk and not fully aware of what he was doing.

In prosecution records, the officer said he was guarding the entrance of the police station while discussing with a colleague when the defendant charged at him from behind and hit his leg, causing it to break.

“I don’t know the type of tool he hit me with. I collapsed on the ground screaming. My colleague entered the police station as the defendant continued beating me and I tried to stand up, seize him and fight back.”

The Emirati colleague, 36, gave a similar account before prosecutors adding, “He was talking to me when the defendant showed up and suddenly struck his leg. I ran inside the police station to call for help.”

Prosecutors demanded the court to sentence the defendant to the toughest punishment applicable in this regard. Case continues.
