SPECIAL INCIDENTS THAT MAKE EID SO CHERISHABLE

- BY NILOUFAR SALEEM

SHARJAH: Eid is a day of celebration, a day families come together, a day to look forward to for some extra food, sweets and delicacies. But what we most often overlook are those little special incidents that bind a family together, those happenings that make the celebration a lot more memorable.

This time for Eid, we at The Gulf Today wanted to give you a glimpse of what it’s like to recall incidents that are relatable in regard to what makes the day more memorable.

We went on to ask a few people to share a few incidents that had them rolling on the loor with laughter on Eid.

We were taken by absolute surprise to see that there are so many who share a light-hearted memory of the celebration. We couldn’t wait to share them with you. So here we go.

Hashim Sheriff, a young and vibrant lad, usually known among his family and friends for his grave humour and sarcastic straight-faced comments, couldn’t hold himself back when we asked him to recall something funny that happened on Eid.

“So here I was on the irst line of the Eid prayer, so sleepy and barely opening my eyes to see the imam. The Takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar) is usually recited 7 times on the irst Rakah of the Eid prayer and then everyone goes to the second position of the prayer which is Rukuu (bending over and placing both hands on the knees), which is not the case in a regular prayer.

“I was so sleepy that the irst time the Imam called out the Takbeer I bent over for Rukuu and then realised that no one else beside me had moved from their position.

“That was so embarrassing. Soon after the prayer was complete all my friends and family started making fun of me for doing that.”

Very relatable. We can vouch that this has happened to at least one person in every family as Eid prayers are usually pretty early in the morning.

FUNNY INCIDENT

Moving on, a lovable and warm personality, Sithara Saleem, who is a home-maker, shared a really funny incident that had us all in splits.

“A few years back, we use to perform the sacriice of the animals for Eid Al Adha in our courtyard. My husband and I woke up on Eid morning and walked towards the goats that were tied to the gate for the sacriice. As soon as my husband untied the goats they pushed and escaped from the gate that was left open. We had at least six people running after the goats that morning,” she said. We really sympathise with the situation Sithara and the others had to face, but running after goats on Eid is not something that could make us hold our laughter back.

If this wasn’t enough to make you laugh, an incredible interior designer and a stunner, Eesha Sheth, shares her experience on what had happened on one of her Eid celebrations.

“My friend’s father was really strict with her. The stories we heard from her regarding how strict he was, had made us all really nervous to actually meet or even greet him. On one Eid noon my friend had invited us for lunch, we are a group of six. So you can imagine the chaos and noise we create when we are together.

“We entered her house and there was biryani, which is a typical Indian delicacy for Eid, arranged on the table and her dad stood there with his arms folded across his chest. We fell completely silent and most of us didn’t know who or what to look at, the biryani or the dad. It was hilarious.”

That was a really tough call for Eesha, because we are aware of how delicious the food cooked on Eid is. And we understand that it’s absolutely dificult to resist.

While chatting with this beauty regarding the incident, the absolutely talented Zahida Javaid shares her funny story with us. As a kid Zahida was a tomboy and did everything she was told not to, almost getting her in trouble most times. She recalls an incident on Eid that even got her a nickname in the family as the “goat girl”.

“I was around 10 and became very friendly with the goats that were in my house for the sacriice.

“We usually would get them down a few months before Eid. So that gave me ample time to build a friendship.

“I was too young to understand why they needed to be sacriiced.

“I would even smuggle up my favourite goat to my room, hide him under my bed and bring him down when no one notices.

“On the day of Eid, I searched for a tree with dense foliage and quietly pulled him up with a rope and tied him to the topmost branch, making sure he stayed safe.

“I ran back inside my house and the celebration had begun.

“Everyone around realised the absence of the goat and started to look for it, but was in vain.

“When the celebrations ended and all relatives started to leave, I brought my goat Mottu down.

“My parents were angry but they forgave me. I was mercilessly teased by my family as the goat girl.”

While the talented Zahida talks to us about her nickname, the charming and chatty Hena takes us back to her favourite childhood memory of Eid that she can never forget.

“My cousin and I loved getting dressed for Eid and launting our money collection bags. After we visited every relative’s house we would open our bags and count on how much we had. One such time we left a relative’s house and started walking as we were digging into our bags with the money.

“We didn’t realise that we were in the middle of the main road and almost missed being rammed by a car.

“The driver who stopped the car with a screeching sound, got off the car and looked at us silently for a second.

“My cousin and I could hear each other’s heartbeat as we were illed with fear of being shouted at for our carelessness but to our surprise the driver got off and handed us Dhs100 each wishing us a happy Eid.” Life is illed with surprises and what better example than this.

It was lovely to come across so many wonderful people with so many happy things to share with us about Eid. Hope our lives are illed with many more such happy experiences and memories making us retain the main essence of Eid Al Adha which is to sacriice, share, spread love and happiness.
