83 women among 237 beggars held
DUBAI: 83 women have been netted among 237 beggars in Dubai Police anti-begging campaign, a senior officer told a press briefing on Monday.
“112 of the 237 were arrested in the month of Ramadan,” explained Naif Police Station director Brigadier Abdul Rahman Saeed Obaidullah. The anti-begging campaign was launched on April 29.

Naif area witnessed the largest number of arrests due to its commercial and logistic nature; 67 were arrested there. The lowest arrests took place in largely residential Al Qusais and Al Barsha areas. The Director of the Department of Combating Infiltrators, Colonel Ali Salim, said the majority of beggars came on visit visas from Asia. He showcased some of the methods police foiled.
Beggars had concocted a series of new methods to rip money off the generous. “Three people were caught begging on the pretext of arranging money for a mosque’s construction.
A Family of ive Comprising A woman, husband and three children were picked up begging around a medical facility. Beside, two Arab women were moving around with a two-year-old child. “They were claiming to be sick and asking people to escort them to a given pharmacy to purchase medicine.
“They would then return to the pharmacy, concoct excuses, return the medicine and get back cash.
“In another incident, a man placed a splint on his foot feigning to have met with an accident. He sat on a wheelchair entreating passersby for inancial Assistance to AFFORD treatment for the ‘fracture.’
“Separately, an Asian man was intercepted driving around in a car bearing GCC number plates. He was telling his targets that he had run out of petrol and had no money,” explained Colonel Ali Salim. Colonel Salem hailed anti-begging teams, and the community members who contacted toll-free number 901 on the whereabouts of beggars, and also through police stations’ numbers or the police app.
The campaign runs in cooperation with the Naturalisation and Residency Directorate, Dubai Municipality, Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department, Community Development Authority and Dar Al Bar Charity Society.
Brigadier Obaidullah commended the cooperation and coordination with these entities in combating begging activities.
