Sharjah Police impound 155 vehicles

- BY LINA ABDEL RAHMAN

SHARJAH: Sharjah Police have impounded 155 vehicles whose owners committed serious violations that pose a danger to their lives and the lives of road users.

The cars were impounded in their owners’ premises instead of the police-designated impounding yards. A small tracking device service was installed in the cars to alert the police if the cars are used or driven during the impoundment period .

The development was announced by Major Abdul Rahman Khater, director of the media and awareness department during a tour organised by Sharjah Police Trafic Department to brief an Indian media team about their services.

He explained that the owner of an impounded car has to only pay the ines of the violation. The violator is not charged for the tracking device. The police only permits 50 metre movement of the car within the premises of the violator.

“If the car is moved beyond that distance, the device sends an alert signal to police and then the impoundment period is doubled. The police also removes the licence plate from the car and circulate sthe registration number across the UAE,” said Major Khater.

Lt. Saud Al Shaiba, Deputy Director of the Trafic department stressed that Sharjah Police recently introduced the home impoundment of vehicles services after grappling with inadequate space in its impoundment lot. “The Trafic Police are making great strides in enhancing the quality of life in the country,” he added

RADARS

During the visit, the journalists were given a tour of the radars monitoring rooms in the premises of the Trafic Police Department. Major Khater confirmed that police have installed numerous ixed and mobile radars not only to detect all types of violations, but to also recognise fake or replaced plate numbers.

“The radars also monitor the movement of heavy trucks during unauthorised timings. They then send a message about the truck to obtain permission to move during the unauthorised period. The radars have been upgraded continuously as per all kinds of violations.”

Speaking about services provided to clients at trafic departments, he said the department commands special facilities for people of determination, pregnant women and the elderly. The services include wheel chairs, parking space, and special counters to serve the vulnerable.

He pointed out that the trafic department consists of four departments, namely: the trafic and patrol section, control and investigation section, trafic engineering section, and rescue section.

He explained that the patrols have been deployed in all intersections of the emirate during peak hours in the morning and evening to ensure smooth trafic low.

The investigation and control section includes a trafic committee to investigate fatal and serious accidents. The committee also coordinates with the hospital about the health condition of the injured to prepare an accurate and fair report for the trafic court.

As part of the tour, the reporters also were briefed about the data entry system of violations tickets issued by the patrol personnel deployed on the roads.

All oficers assigned to enter the trafic ine tickets information have a security code which they cannot share with anyone.
