Man ‘threatened to cut partner’s throat’

A HOMELESS man threatened to slice his partner’s throat “from ear to ear” just weeks after torching a Gold Coast home and boat where the words “that’s for (expletive) my wife” were spraypainted on the wall, police allege.

Kyle Lance Mansfield, 27, was refused bail in the Southport Magistrates Court yesterday. He is facing 22 charges including arson, deprivation of liberty, assault occasioning bodily harm and burglary.

His alleged spree involved four incidents between January 14 and March 9. In January he allegedly set fire to an Ashmore home and stole a boat, which he torched in Clagiraba bushland.

The words “that’s for (expletive) my wife” were written on the side of the home but Mansfield is not accused of the graffiti.

Police found items stolen from the Ashmore home in a storage unit hired by Mansfield, the court was told.

He is accused two weeks later of trying to strangle himself in front of his partner after she broke up with him in her Paradise Point home.

She fled and Mansfield followed her until she arrived at the Southport Police station, police prosecutor Paige Barrow told the court.

About a month later Mansfield terrorised the woman again, driving off in her car and refusing to let her out, it is alleged.

The court was told during that drive on February 24, Mansfield threatened to cut her throat “from ear to ear” and blamed her for police chasing him.

About the same time, Mansfield allegedly broke into a Hope Island home between February 23 and March 1.

“Property was stolen, food had been consumed and the bed was slept in,” Ms Barrow said.

Mansfield’s fingerprint was found in the home, it is alleged.

Ms Barrow said police caught up with Mansfield days later on March 9 after his car was spotted.

Mansfield’s solicitor Bettina Webb, of Howden Saggers Lawyers, said the police’s case against Mansfield for the arson was circumstantial. She argued the threat

to Mansfield’s former partner would be minimised as he would be moving to Victoria where he could get work as a concreter with his brother.

Magistrate Howden refused bail as he was concerned about the woman’s safety.

“He is on a suspended sentence for similar matters and he has allegedly threatened to kill her,” Mr Howden said.

“What conditions can I put in place that he is not going to go around there and carry out his threats?”

Mansfield is scheduled to appear in court again on June 6.
