Simple to see why council traffic engineers didn’t take up brain surgery. Shoehorned light rail into 2 of the city’s main streets in Southport and Surfers Paradise. Totally stuffed up traffic. Now a snail pace. Then gloat about reduced car traffic on those two roads and all roads feeding to and from. Recent traffic statistics confirm light rail is not a success for the community as a whole. Just a few subsidised passengers. Businesses are still severely hurting years after construction finished. Oldie. You hit the nail on the head with the statement that trams only serve “a narrow band of residents” all others have to drive to it then clog up the parking in suburban streets. Buses use roads that are already in place and can go to wherever a new housing development springs up.
