New name for Bunyip community house

-

Bunyip and District Community House will announce a new and improved name next month at a Re-naming Ceremony on July 16.

While they cannot yet reveal what the name is going to be, BDCH manager Nicole Lucas said it was carefully chosen in consultation with Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation.

Several neighbourhood houses in Victoria also have names in First Nation's languages, such as the Budja Budja Neighbourhood House in the Grampians National Park and Balla Balla Community Centre in Cranbourne East.

Ms Lucas said she hopes the new name will make the house more inclusive and welcome people from all over the district, not just the immediate area.

She said the idea behind the name change was to make sure the house's name was reflective of the area rather than just the township it was located in.

Re-naming celebrations will begin at 11am and extend into the early afternoon. Members of the council and government will be attending for the official naming plaque unveiling.

Ms Lucas said plans for the celebrations include activities for kids, such as face painting and an animal farm, as well as a barbecue and bushfoods from Peppermint Ridge Farm.

A raffle will also be drawn on the day, with up to $1000 worth of prizes being donated by local businesses for the raffle.

People can enter the raffle by registering for the $250 Victorian Power Saving Bonus through BDCH, this can be done online or by contacting BDCH by phone or email.

From July 1 all Victorians are eligible to apply for the bonus.

Ms Lucas said the event would be a good opportunity for locals to learn about the house and what it offers. For more information contact 0481 895 509 or info@bdch.com.au.

Bunyip and District Community House is next to the Garfield Pool on Beswick Street, Garfield.
