Cold conditions for night game

Round five kicked off Friday night with Ellinbank hosting Longwarry in their first home game, which was played out in cold and blustery conditions.

To the joy of both players and supporters, the weather cleared to a beautiful sunny morning for the matches played on Saturday morning. Ellinbank v Longwarry Under 10 With a swirly wind about, it was hard to pick an end if you won the toss.

The game got off to a slow start without a score ‘pegged’ in the first quarter. The wind subsided in the second quarter, making scoring shots easier for both teams with only a point between them at the commenceme­nt of the fourth quarter.

It was Longwarry’s three minor attempts at goal that got them the win in a nail biter of a game. Under 12 There was a lot of excitement tonight for Longwarry’s first game under lights and the first night game at Ellinbank.

Longwarry started strong and Ellinbank came back to keep Longwarry scoreless in the third quarter. Longwarry held off to take the win.

Ellinbank’s Cal Kennedy and Will McLean together with Longwarry’s Cody McInnes, played their 50th games. Under 14 In relatively good conditions for a Friday night game, Longwarry and Ellinbank played a very even game for the first half.

In the second half Ellinbank came out strong but Longwarry were stronger in the air, marking the ball and kicking away for a comfortabl­e win.

Longwarry’s Caleb Bek and Kai Savage played their 50th games. Neerim District v Bunyip Under 10 Neerim got off to a great start and their quick ball movement was too strong for Bunyip.

Bunyip never gave up and played great team football in the second half. Under 12 In sunny but damp conditions Bunyip quickly kicked the first goal and gained momentum for the football.

Neerim defended well and put a final burst in the last quarter but Bunyip was too strong running away with the win. Under 14 An inaccurate Bunyip kept Neerim District in the first quarter after kicking six consecutiv­e points.

In the second quarter Bunyip began to find the goals and asserted their dominance over the young Cats. Caldermead­e v Buln Buln Under 10 A crisp but sunny morning had the boys excited to start.

All players went in for the ball and at the end of the first half, Caldermead­e had kicked four unanswered goals.

Buln Buln fought hard and despite strong defensive work in the final term, Caldermead­e’s forward line pulled them further ahead for a convincing lead. Under 12 Caldermead­e started strong with Buln pushing back in the second half.

Buln showed great improvemen­t in their game, kicking four goals but Caldermead­e were just too strong on the day, showcasing a great game of football. Under 14 As the sun poked in and out of the clouds, the game was played with a lot of pressure and a real will to win the ball from both teams.

Buln started well with plenty of the ball however couldn’t kick straight. Caldermead­e did not give in, taking the game up to Buln all the way to the final siren.

Drouin Maroon v Garfield Under 10 In perfect conditions for football both sides took to the field with high expectatio­ns.

Garfield dominated in the first quarter and flew away with an early lead. Maroon came back strong in the second half with two quick goals to even the score.

The final quarter was an intense competitiv­e term with plenty of vocal support from the boundary line.

Garfield running out winners by one goal in a close fought game. Under 12 Both teams played hard footy for the four quarters.

It was the Maroons who had the edge over Garfield from the start with Garfield increasing their mark on the board in the final quarter, but it was not enough and Maroons were too good at the end. Maroon Isaac Caroleo played his 50th game. Under 14 What was potentiall­y going to be the match of the round did not disappoint.

A high level of skill saw a brilliant game being played out in front of spectators with the first two quarters going goal for goal.

Maroons kept to their game plan, coming out convincing winner. Yarragon v Blues Under 10 The Blues kept Yarragon scoreless the whole game, but Yarragon deserve credit for their effort and desire. Under 12 Blues dominated the scoreboard while Yarragon tried hard to block the play, both teams showing great team tactics.

Yarragon tried hard all day but the Blues were a little too strong in the finish, kicking a good score to win the match comfortabl­y.

Yarragon’s Angus Kosic played his 50th game. Under 14 It was a tough contest from the first bounce with the Blues getting the score on the board.

Yarragon responded with a goal in the third and despite the fight, Blues came away with the win. Hallora v Drouin Gold Under 10 Hallora tackled and attacked the ball well however Drouin Gold came away with the win. Under 12 While Drouin Gold dominated, Hallora played hard all day and made sure Drouin had to earn their goals.

Hallora’s Jacob Obernhumer played his 50th game. Under 14 Drouin Gold came up against an undermanne­d but very spirited opposition in Hallora, who gave it their all for the four quarters but Drouin were just too strong in the end. The Bulls v Warranor Under 10 Loch hosted Warranor in a very close contest with each team taking the lead at in the first two quarters.

Bulls scored a goal in the third to regain the lead and that was it for the remainder of the game with neither team able to score in the final quarter.

All players were enjoying themselves and this showcased excellent under 10s football from both sides. Under 12 A good fight back in the second half saw the Bulls get back in the game however they were unable to get in front and went down by eight points. Under 14 Warranor came out strong and moved the ball well.

The Bulls held a strong defence and took some great marks but Warranor pushed hard and came away with the win.

Warragul Colts had the bye.
