Madlyn wins state cap

-

Yarragon cricketer Madlyn Borsato has been selected in the Victorian State Primary School under 12 squad.

Ever since Madlyn watched her first match of cricket, she fell in love with the game. She began playing at the age of seven, by filling in for Yarragon under 12s when they were short.

Her bowling and batting from then to now has improved phenomenally, with her bowling picking up pace and becoming much more accurate.

Madlyn currently plays four grades of cricket, including under 12s, under 14s, men’s senior division five and in Gippsland Cricket League for Warragul Hotshots.

Her figures speak for themselves, as almost every game she plays she takes wickets.

The Victorian trials went on for many weeks, and a lot of girls were cut from the side, but Madlyn remained. It came down to the last try out and Madlyn had made the 13-player squad, securing her spot as a key asset pace bowler.

“It was tough,” Madlyn said of the trials.

“There were a lot of fast bowlers.”

Madlyn, who will represent her state for the first time and is the only player from Gippsland in the team, will train with the state team next month.

She will aim to play as much cricket as possible in the lead up to the tournament, with the players to receive their caps in a special presentation during day three of the Boxing Day Test Match between Australia and Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

In the new year Madlyn and her family will be travelling to Canberra to play in the national tournament, hoping that she takes many wickets.

The Victorian team will play in five matches at the tournament, competing against Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Western Australia and Queensland.

The Victorian players will receive two shirts for the tournament and are encouraged to do a shirt swap at the end of the tournament, with the tournament presenting an opportunity to form lifelong friendships.

Madlyn thanked people who have bought raffle tickets along with Yarragon Primary School, which has also contributed to fundraising efforts.

The family would welcome sponsorship to help assist with travelling costs. To sponsor Madlyn, phone Paula Borsato on 0419 285 862.
