Hopes for Apple in 2018
In your newsletter, you asked what we hope Apple will do this year. Are you granting me three Apple wishes? Lovely! Wish 1: that it moves the iPhone’s on/off button to the top edge instead of the side – where I inevitably press a volume control while awkwardly trying to turn it off or take a screenshot.
Wish 2: that it stops bringing out yearly system updates, and only releases when something sound and secure is ready.
Wish 3: for intentional support to continue for Photoshop CS5 so I can update to the latest macOS. We can’t all afford subscription services! (I have no wishes for MacFormat. It’s perfect already.)
Paul sa ys… You wouldn’t believe how many times we’ve heard Alan curse when he picks up his iPhone X and takes a screenshot by accidentally pressing buttons on both sides! We can’t see this changing, though, since the side button is used even more extensively on Apple’s current top-of-the-line smartphone.
We’re hoping to learn about reported changes to Apple’s development process at WWDC in June. It’ll be interesting to see how far it allows features to be held back. We also hope it’ll disclose more about the (non-)future of 32-bit apps on the Mac; we’ll be returning to this topic to cover your options for keeping old apps running on macOS 10.14.
Finally, thank you very much for your kind words about the magazine.
