Folx Go+ 3
How fast can you go with this new version of the download manager?
£13.99 Developer Eltima software, mac.eltima.com
OS OS X 10.8.3 or later Requires 64-bit processor, 20.8 MB hard disk space
Folx Go+ 3 is the latest download manager from Eltima. The software is designed to help you more easily manage large downloads or multiple downloads in a user-friendly interface. Perhaps its most interesting ability is to manually set download speeds, so if you want to get a large file, and have the time to wait, you can get it without that one file monopolising your connection.
You can split downloads into manageable chunks of up to ten streams too. Furthermore, Folx Go+ also lets you pause and resume downloads at will, which is fantastic for those really big downloads where you have a slow or patchy connection. The last time we reviewed Folx there was only a limited speed improvement and the same is true again here, but the real benefit is the control over downloads the software allows. One other added bonus is the ability to add tags to downloads, making it easier to find your stuff when you’ve collected all your files.
Though there has been a lot of downward pressure on software pricing in the past few years, at just shy of £14, Folx is still good value if you need the features. There’s no doubt that Folx GO+ is a niche product. For most people, the standard downloader in Safari is adequate, but if you’re using mobile broadband or a slow connection and need to get hold of large files, this app can really help you out. Christopher Brennan Folx won't give huge speed improvements, but it does make download management easier.
