MEET OUR POSTER ARTIST, KAY VINCENT

This jelly looks like a cheery fellow. What inspired him? I came up with the jelly image first because I love the retro vibes of ’70s dinner party food illustrations – he started life as just a happy jelly. The “it’s OK to have a wobble” slogan was a second thought, but perfectly matched! Tell us about yourself. I sell art prints for kids (and grown-up kids) in Forest Hill, South East London. Before I had children, I designed prints for children’s fashion for high street brands. Playful prints that make smiles happen will always be my thing! Folks loved to put gelatine in everything back in the day. Were you subjected to any strange gelatinous concoctions growing up? At my nan’s house we’d add a wee tin of fruit cocktail to the inside of a jelly. I’m obsessed with old magazine ad graphics of savoury jello salads with olives, veggies and prawns inside. Dinner parties these days are boring in comparison. When do you feel the most creative? When the kids are at school and I have the room to think. At the beginning of each season, I have to explore newness. Exploring shops on city breaks is ideal, but family life makes things a little restricting. I watched Barbie the other day and then revisited Little Shop of Horrors and felt inspired. It’s mostly old things from the past that I want to reinvent and make new. I have a great vintage kids’ book collection – they are often revisited for inspo. What are you working on? I’m working on an exciting range of kids’ picture books. It’s a nature novelty series for babies who love spotting wildlife. I also have my own new range of customisable kids’ portrait prints where your little one is holding their favourite thing. Where can we see more of your work? At kayvincentillustration.com, facebook.com/ kayvincentillustration and @kayvincentillustration
