WENNY’S MK3 ESCORT...........................
The mental Mk3 rebuild sees the arrival of new upgrades, including a fancy new ECU…
“I REALLY FANCY AN ICE CREAM!”
WENNY
Progress has been a bit slow with the Mk3 lately, and that’s mainly because I’ve been jetting off all over the place sunning myself rather than enduring the nasty climate of the North East of England! But I’m back now, and I’m ready to crack on…
With the vast majority of the shell modifications now complete, including the removable front wings and front panel that I’ve wanted for a while, it was time to start looking at what else the rebuild is going to require. That meant a few head scratching moments and working out which direction we were going to go with the YB powerplant and any possible future upgrades.
The first dilemma was whether to stick with the Pectel ECU or go for something a bit newer with a load of fancy features. After chatting with a few guys I trust I decided to go for the new Life Racing F88 engine management system. This will hopefully allow things to run a little smoother, be easier to identify and rectify any running issues, and will also allow me to add goodies such as air shift, launch control, and traction control that I plan to fit at a later stage of the rebuild.
The shopping list for new parts also included a new intercooler from Airtec. The last one suffered irreparable damage during the accident, so it gave us the perfect opportunity to look at a new one. The new intercooler is massive, so should help keep the ACTs under control no matter what we plan to do with the car in the future. That’s all been trial fitted and is now away being powdercoated.
This month we’ve also been able to fill in some 40-odd unused holes with plug welds as well as box-off the strut tops, to help keep the engine bay looking as clean, smooth, and clutterfree as possible.
Work is continuing at pace now, as I want this car out again for the summer…
