over his visa because of Brexit. It means he will miss tomorrow’s clash at Chelsea and it is doubtful he will be in charge ahead of Thursday’s game with Arsenal at Old Trafford.

He will take up the role of ‘Senior Football Advisor’ at United on a two-year deal in June.

Part of his remit will be to refine the footballing structure at United and turn the fallen giants into an “elite operation” that improves the club’s chances of “sustained success”.

The Reds board want to employ an experienced and knowledgeable expert who can refine the work done both on and off the pitch during Solskjaer’s time as manager.

It remains to be seen who United’s next fulltime coach will be, but Mauricio Pochettino (above) and Brendan Rodgers are two of the leading targets, while Rangnick is a huge admirer of Ajax boss Erik ten Hag.

Rangnick was hoping to travel to Manchester this weekend and be at Stamford Bridge to watch United take on the Blues from the stands tomorrow.

But he will not arrive in England until the middle of next week due to paperwork issues meaning Rangnick, who has been working as sporting director of

Lokomotiv Moscow, will be forced to watch United’s clash with Thomas Tuchel’s men on TV instead.

United have still to finalise the precise details of his contract, but expect to agree a deal with the 63-year-old within the next 24 hours.

Rangnick’s contract will include lucrative bonuses rewarding him for winning a trophy or getting United into the top four.
