Ticking all the boxes

THE DAVIS IS NEWMARKET’S FIRST MAJOR HIGHRISE CONDO PROJECT IN 30 YEARS

- Adam Bisby Special to National Post

As a self- employed hairstylist, Adrienne Moccia has heard it all over the years. And if not for those salon conversations, she says, she might still be hunting for a home. Late last year, the 67-year-old mother and grandmother got word of the Davis Residences at Bakersfield not through the usual channels — marketing emails, agent flyers, hoardings — but from a chatty client in her salon chair.

Set on the VIVA Rapidway transit route and within walking distance of the Newmarket GO station, the 15- storey project, being developed by the Rose Corporation, is the first phase of a 4.4- acre master- planned community just west of Highway 404 that will eventually consist of three towers rising over a landscaped courtyard and a new half- acre public park. The development is scheduled for completion in 2022.

The first major highrise condo to be built in Newmarket in more than 30 years, the Davis’s one- to three- bedroom units range in price from around $ 400,000 to more than $ 600,000; amenities include a stylish lobby and lounge with fireplace, a fitness centre and yoga studio, a party room with kitchen, furnished guest suites, a children’s play room and a landscaped rooftop terrace.

Post Homes spoke to Adrienne about her search, and what she loves about the twobedroom- plus- den suite she locked into on the Davis’s eighth floor.

Q Why were you in the market for a new home?

A I wasn’t ready to leave the townhome I’m in now, but I want to have the option of being able to do that. I don’t want my age to dictate where I’m going. The last thing I want to do is go into a nursing home, but I also don’t want my kids to have to take on any unnecessary burden. I want to be prepared. I don’t go looking for change, but you have to take it into account and do the best you can. gives me control once I’m ready to move.

Q How did your search unfold? A I’ve been looking for about three years, in different areas and at different types of buildings and setups. If I saw something online or in the paper and it seemed interesting, I would sign up with the website and they would email me information. It usually went by the wayside because it wasn’t what I was interested in or didn’t appeal to me. Then I heard about the Davis from a client at the salon, and it really caught my eye. It appealed to my senses and my tastes and I could visualize myself living there. I told one of my friends, also a longtime client at the salon, that I was planning to check out the Davis, so he came with me to the sales office. He was just looking out for me.

The first unit I really wanted

— on a middle floor, which is my preference — wasn’t available. My second choice was also gone, so it came down to my third choice. The only real difference is the exposure, which isn’t all that important to me. Q What was the most important factor in your search? A Having owned a townhouse in Newmarket for nearly 30 years, I came to realize that I have a special love for my hometown. Rather than moving further north or closer to Toronto, it just felt right to stay here. It’s a great location and really central. Q What do you like best about your new home?

A I wanted a wraparound glass balcony and it has one. I wanted something open-concept and that’s the style of the place. I also knew I wanted something more intimate and social than a highrise. The Davis just ticks all the boxes for me. Q What are you looking forward to most?

A Having all-new stuff! When you have the same stuff in the same house for 30 years you look forward to getting rid of it. Moving to the Davis will force me to do that. I’m actually decluttering as we speak, and this gives me a lot of motivation. Q What advice do you have for someone looking for a condo?

A I did right to honour what was rattling around in my head. I started looking, and eventually I found a place that just felt right. It’s also important to make a decision and stick to it. Go with your instincts and trust yourself.
