Battling Tigers remain in danger of relegation
JOJO Wollacott saved a penalty on his Gloucester City debut but was unable to avert defeat for Chris Todd’s Tigers as Chelmsford scored a goal in each half to take all three points in National League South.
The on-loan Bristol City stopper blocked Tom Wraight’s first-half spot-kick, but saw the Chelmsford man tap in the rebound to give his side the lead, and Nasha Amos made it two early in the second period as the hosts triumphed.
Gloucester certainly showed plenty of industry, but could not get the ball into the net to make it interesting late on.
Chelmsford made the better start to the game and almost took the lead on 20 minutes, only for Wollacott, pictured, to pull off a stunning save to deny Jonathan Giles from Wraight’s ball in.
Wraight then headed wide from a Chez Isaac free-kick, but the breakthrough eventually arrived after 26 minutes.
Giles was played through only to be taken down by Sam Avery and Wraight gave the home side the lead from the rebound after seeing Wollacott dive to his left to save his penalty kick.
The hosts might have had a second goal before half-time, but Giles dragged his shot past the post after taking aim from outside the box.
Chelmsford doubled their lead four minutes into the second half when Isaac’s cross took a deflection and Nasha got there first to nod the ball home, although it may have been an own goal.
Gloucester came on strong in the latter portion of the second half, but Jake Jackson saw his shot saved by the home goalkeeper, while Matt Liddiard could only steer the ball high and wide after arriving at the far post.
Jackson and Andre Wright then appeared to get in each other’s way as another opportunity went awry with time running out.
Ultimately, though, the visitors could not get a goal and they remain in relegation danger.
