MEXICO CITY, Sept 21, (Xinhua): Mexico manager Javier Aguirre has left open the possibility of recalling veterans Carlos Vela and Guillermo Ochoa ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Vela, 35, has not played for his country since the 2018 World Cup in Russia while 39-year-old goalkeeper Ochoa last represented El Tri in March this year.

“I do not close the door to anything or anyone,” Aguirre told reporters. “They are footballers and are eligible to play for Mexico. I do not look at other things, only that they are in good form and want to be a part of the team.” Vela, who returned from a nine-month hiatus to rejoin Los Angeles FC this month, began his career at Arsenal, where he scored a hat-trick on his full debut as a 19-year-old. But his career has largely been marked by disciplinary problems, injuries and inconsistent form.

The forward has been capped 72 times for Mexico, scoring 19 goals.

“I’m glad that Carlos is back,” Aguirre said. “He has given us a lot of joy, he has a lot of talent. I repeat, the doors are open for him and for everyone.”

Aguirre had similar words of encouragement for Ochoa, who is currently contracted to Portuguese side AVS Futebol.

“The door is open and his experience is a plus,” Aguirre said. “I don’t focus on age, but on quality. I focus a lot on desire. They need to be proud and comfortable about being a part of the national team.”
