“It might be the most predictable bellwether of the dark cultural moment we’re in,” said Murray Whyte in The Boston Globe. Last week, the scheduled fall exhibition of Amy Sherald’s celebrated “American Sublime” show at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery was canceled because the Trump administration took offense at one of Sherald’s paintings. “The only surprise” might be that it was Sherald who called off the show. The artist announced that Trans Forming Liberty, which depicts a transgender woman posing as the Statue of Liberty, sparked the conflict and that she refused to see it removed or shown with a video of viewers reacting to it because doing so “would have opened up for debate the value of trans visibility.” Credit Vice President JD Vance, said Diana Stancy in FoxNews.com. He has been tasked with policing content at federally funded museums and quietly flagged the painting in June.
