‘Get over your fears and see life differently’

PASSIONATE Mother City Skydiving club skydivers hope that all those that are introduced to skydiving remain in the sport and continue jumping.

A team of 20 people have assisted hundreds of people from all over the world tick off an item on their bucket lists and overcome their fears.

The drop zone operator at Mother City Skydiving, Michael Rumble, said they hope to inspire visitors to the club to fall in love with aviation, flight and extreme sports.

“This is flight we are talking about, it is not magic, it’s physics. From the moment you leave the aircraft, you don’t fall, you fly, so we get people over fears, knowledge helps them overcome their fear. The more relaxed they are, the better.”

He said the experience is not an ordinary one.

“We hope to inspire people to see life differently, to see the sky differently. The tandem introductory skydive allows people to get over their fears and experience freedom.”

The vice-chairman of the club, Frederik Potgieter, said he never thought he would be doing skydiving professionally, and was driven to the sport by boredom.

“I was bored and I googled adventure activities, and that’s the first thing that came up. I first thought you have to be crazy to jump out of a plane, but I went to do a tandem and there was a younger girl that was jumping before me and I wanted to chicken out.

“But when she went, I couldn’t back down. and I am here now and I can’t stop.”

His colleague, Jean-Jacques Wallis, who is also a photographer, said skydiving was practically in his blood, as he grew up in a skydiving club.

He did his first tandem skydive when he was 12, and has 6 000 jumps under his belt.

Professional skydiver Thomas Jouek loves the sport so much that he left his hometown in Switzerland to continue skydiving as the northern hemisphere is experiencing winter.
