Pupils learn why it’s good to be fair with farmers

- DAVID CAMPBELL

Pupils f rom R e n f r ews h i r e schools learned all about the benefits of fair trade at a special event in Linwood.

Youngsters from St Margaret’s Primary in Johnstone, Todholm Primary and Mary Russell School, both in Paisley, and Bishopton Primary took part in workshops and activities.

The fairtrade movement aims to highlight to need for people around world to a get a fair price for the goods they produce.

The event was organised by Rainbow Turtle and Just Trading Scotland (JTS) on behalf of the Renfrewshire Fair Trade Steering Group.

The aim was to focus on the 90kg Rice Challenge and how it can be used within schools to teach about fair trade, social enterprise and global citizenship whilst counting towards Fairtrade Schools status.

The thinking behind the challenge is that 90kg of rice is how much a farmer in Malawi needs to sell in order to send a child to secondary school.
