Cunha close to signing new Wolves deal amid interest from Arsenal
Matheus Cunha is close to signing a lucrative new contract at Wolves which would provide a huge lift for the club’s relegation fight.
Cunha and his representatives are in advanced talks over a new deal and the Brazilian forward is expected to commit his future officially to Wolves within two weeks.
As first reported by Telegraph Sport on Nov 29, Wolves have moved to tie down their star of the season by offering him a long-term extension.
It is understood the new terms could include a release clause that will become active only if Wolves are relegated, but details of the contract are yet to be fully agreed.
Arsenal have shown some interest in signing Cunha, who has scored 10 goals and delivered four assists in the Premier League this season.
However, Wolves never had any fears over a sale this month and have been close to an agreement with Cunha for a few weeks.
The 25-year-old will miss the next two matches after admitting improper conduct following a confrontation with an Ipswich staff member last month.
Cunha has returned to Brazil to attend to a family matter and will return this week.
Wolves, meanwhile, are putting the finishing touches to a £15million deal for Reims centre-back Emmanuel Agbadou.
The Ivory Coast international will become manager Vitor Pereira’s first signing and is expected to attend Wolves’ home match against Nottingham Forest tonight.
Pereira is unbeaten since taking charge last month and has admitted other signings could follow this month.
He said: “We are working in the market like the other teams. I’m trying to understand what my players can give to me for the way of play that I want to see.
“The club knows that we need one or two in other positions and that it’s important to bring someone in, but I’m happy with my team.”
