Daniel Ennis amends ‘oversight’ in omitting SocDems job

SOCIAL Democrats by-election candidate Daniel Ennis has written to Dublin City Council to amend his declaration of interests after an ‘oversight’ led to him omitting that he was employed by the party.

Mr Ennis was elected as a councillor for the Social Democrats in June 2024 in Dublin’s north inner city.

Once elected, all councillors must fill out a declaration of interests stating ‘any other remunerated trade, profession, employment, vocation or other occupation held’ within the past 12 months. Mr Ennis put a stroke through the box. However, Mr Ennis was working for the party’s sitting TD in Dublin Central Gary Gannon.

A spokeswoman for the party described the omission as an ‘oversight’ and confirmed he contacted Dublin City Council this month to correct the record.

She said: ‘It has been widely reported that Daniel works with Gary Gannon and it’s something he has spoken about publicly. However, due to an oversight this wasn’t included in his DCC disclosure.

‘Daniel was in contact with DCC on Monday, May 11, to notify them of this error and the disclosure is being amended.’

Earlier this week the Mail reported that Mr Ennis insisted he was not aware of the fraudulent activities of the tax-dodging discount shop where he worked for seven years. Mr Ennis was employed by Dominicks Bargains Ltd from 2016 to 2023. In May 2022, a search of the company’s shop, known as Dominics Crazy Deals, in Tallaght, Dublin, found 44,560 cigarettes and 2.75kg of hand-rolled tobacco that did not carry the Irish tax stamp.

Cash totalling €78,000 was also seized from the company’s owner, Anthony Walsh, during the search.

In January, Mr Walsh pleaded guilty to keeping, for sale or delivery, untaxed tobacco products, and was fined €5,000.
