Bar a one page introduction to each book, the rest of the book comprises references to people, with details taken from ‘primary sources such as court records, contemporary newspapers and journals, monumental inscriptions, and documents located in archives’. Brief source details are provided for each reference. The introduction goes to explain: ‘Most entries bring together emigrants, their destinations, especially in North America and Australasia, and their kind who remained in Scotland’. A reminder is given that the reason why Scots may be found ‘Abroad’ so particularly in the first half of the 19th century was the Highland Clearances.
