Android Nougat is exciting for lots of reasons, but usually a new Android OS comes alongside new hardware for us to get our teeth into. The N upgrade was an exception and, while new hardware is indeed coming, Nougat was unveiled with little fanfare at the end of August. But it’s a launch worth celebrating: read more overleaf.

We’ve a couple more weeks to wait for new Google hardware, but the company’s rumoured 4 October event is likely to be well worth the wait, with a new Nexus 7 tablet from Huawei (finally), two new not-Nexus-but-Pixel-branded smartphones, Google Home, Daydream VR and a 4K Chromecast. We’ll have full details in the next issue.

It’s not all about Google, of course, and one of the big stories in the past few weeks has been Samsung’s face-palm (should that be napalm) Note7 recall. Many of us had planned to get our hands on the next Galaxy when it launched on 2 September, but instead we woke to news that shipments had halted and a global recall was underway following reports of the new Note7’s battery starting fires and causing mayhem all over the place.

Good job we had IFA 2016 to keep us distracted, with exciting launches including the Sony Xperia XZ (p23), Samsung Gear S3 Frontier (p28), Moto Z Play (p41), and several Huawei devices (p48 onward).
