The ranking looked at five categories — stability, health care, culture and environmen­t, education and infrastruc­ture — in 140 countries.

In second and third places were two Australian cities: Melbourne and Sydney respective­ly. Also populating the top 10 were Osaka and Tokyo in Japan; Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto in Canada; Adelaide, Australia; and Copenhagen, Denmark.

At the other end of the scale, the least liveable city was also the same as last year’s: Damascus, Syria. Lagos, Nigeria, came in second-worst, followed by Dhaka, Bangladesh; Tripoli, Libya; Karachi, Pakistan, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea; and Harare, Zimbabwe.
