More questions than answers for loved ones

- By GRAEME HOSKEN

● A lack of blood, a gaping wound and his missing cellphone have sparked suspicion of foul play among the family of Gavin Watson.

“Things do not add up,” said his nephew Jared Watson. “We simply cannot rule out foul play at this stage.”

He said the family’s suspicions and the “myriad of questions” had raised the possibility of a private investigation of the death.

“Driving our suspicions is the lack of blunt-force trauma to Gavin’s head and the lack of blood in and around the car, especially given the massive gaping wound to his neck. Given that he had the blood-thickening disorder polycythemia rubra vera, which required him take blood-thinning medication and Disprin daily, and the massive wound to his neck, one would have expected to see far more blood in the car.”

He said Watson’s cellphone had been tracked to Germiston and then Bryanston.

“We know he had it with him at the time of the accident but when it could not be found, we had people try to track it.”

It was first tracked to Germiston, then to a 50m radius in Bryanston at about 7pm. Since then there has been no signal.

He said the movement of the phone was “really strange”.

“One would not expect a beggar, who could have possibly picked it up from the accident scene, to be able to move so fast.”

Jared said that by looking at photographs of the crashed Toyota Corolla, it was clear the accident was at high speed.

“Given that Gavin did not wear seatbelts, why was he not thrown from the vehicle?

“We know that Gavin was to testify on Tuesday at a Sars inquiry against [former Bosasa director Angelo] Agrizzi. In fact the day Gavin died, he and I were to go to our lawyers in Pretoria to prep for the next day’s inquiry appearance.”

Jared said the family was eager for the results of the postmortem.

“The wait is killing the family.”
