Polokwane muni officials could be disciplined for laxity

>> Failed to cut services in Mankweng >> "Debt runs into hundred millions" - Marx

he Democratic Alliance (DA) representation in Polokwane Municipality is adamant that officials in the Finance Department of the municipality should face disciplinary action after they allegedly failed to implement an earlier council resolution to cut the services of defaulting consumers in Mankweng.

During the council meeting last Wednesday, Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Franco Marx enquired about the progress being made to act against defaulting consumers in Mankweng and its was revealed that no action has been taken against residential consumers as yet. "This is totally unacceptable as the Mankweng debt was already in excess of R300 million by the end of January," Marx said and demanded that the Municipal Manager and Chief Finance Officer take immediate disciplinary action against officials for failure to execute their duties.

"The responsible officials have to instruct the municipality's contractor to disconnect or restrict services and there is clearly a lack of will to act in the case of Mankweng while services in other areas of supply, like Seshego and the city are cut," Marx said.

Communications and Marketing Manager of the municipality, Matshidiso Mothapo said that services of some defaulting businesses in Mankweng have been cut and that the installation of smart meters is in progress in the residential area.

"This is a process and will involve the recovery of outstanding debts," Mothapo said and added that Municipal Manager Dikgape Makobe will follow due diligence to determine whether steps will be taken against any offi cials.
